Why? Why now?

One month later, winter had begun. It was a day that Meng Fei and He Zhi went shopping, so they strolled the street, gazing through windows. He Zhi wanted them to go buy sets of new furniture, and Meng Fei had no objections to her plan, but he also had no interest in it as well. So just like ones of old sacrificed themselves to keep their companions company, so, too, did Meng Fei sacrifice himself on this day to accompany his future wife.

What's going on with him?

What's going on with him?

After meeting Meng Fei just once, she had to rush to the north without a second to spare.

After the two walked along a few streets or so, He Zhi found herself tired. Meng Fei held on to her coat, while she took out a kerchief to dab away her sweat. Then as she looked into her mirror to reapply her makeup, Meng Fei's eyes wandered around uncomfortably until he suddenly spotted a figure amidst the ever surging crowd.

So what about it was strange? Once, something weird had happened. She had called Meng Fei around ten as usual and someone had picked up on the other end. But when she said, "Hello, Meng Fei?" and waited for an answer, none came through. All she heard from the other end of the line was faint breathing, but that person never said a thing! The faint sounds of a shower running in the background could be heard by He Zhi, sounds she assumed was Meng Fei taking a shower. If so, then who was person? Who was the one that answered the phone?!

He almost thought it was ghost!

She had met both of Meng Fei's parents as well as his older brother and sisters before, and she knew the old couple were satisfied with her as a daughter-in-law to be. But this did not mean He Zhi would act with complacence, so after dressing meticulously and checking herself over and over again in the mirror, did she finally feel at ease.

Was... He Zhi's heart trembled at the thought, was he already tired of my body? Or was it... Or was it that... he had already found himself another woman?

Even though his reaction hadn't fully come, he had already stuffed He Zhi's coat in her arms, he had already hastily told her he'd back soon before he rushed off.

Amongst the people traversing the streets, all dressed in varied styles, all wearing varied expressions, there was one—one person who was dressed in coat so large and thick, but the sight of them was fleeting. Yet, even then, Meng Feis heart erupted in an instant, beating furiously like a drum.

But the thing that made He Zhi worried was Meng Fei. Even though he was sitting right beside her, and asking her questions time to time like if she was comfortable, or if the meal tasted good. He even helped pass her dishes, along with napkins too. When he noticed her looking at him, he would send her back a sweet smile that all tender and loving. But... even more than this, he seemed to sinking in to a quagmire of emotions otherwise. It was like he had forgotten he was sitting, eating, and conversing with group of people, his mind drifting off somewhere far. Then, every now and again, he would frown, smile, then expose a curious expression that was practically like a person intoxicated to point the bliss has driven them mad.

The reason for this was actually not on account of any of Meng Fei's doing, but because He Zhi's mother passed away suddenly in a car accident.

But just as she was about to ask this, Meng Fei was the one to first speak up.

It looks like... I looks like...

He then cast an apologetic gaze towards He Zhi, "I'm sorry, He Zhi. I was afraid you might get mad, so I couldn't discuss it with you. So let's talk about over today, right now. So Dad, Mom, you guy's won;t refuse, will you?"

Even though his reaction hadn't fully come, he had already stuffed He Zhi's coat in her arms, he had already hastily told her he'd back soon before he rushed off.

She did not believe in controlling where Meng Fei goes, and she knew an introvert like Meng Fei didn't have the habit of working late into the night or roaming around outside when it got that late.

Afterwards... after that...

For half a month, He Zhi had to stay behind because of the funeral. Then after bidding farewell to spouse, her sorrowful father went back to work a his business. But after this, instead of returning to where Meng Fei was, to her misfortune, her company had sent her on a business trip up north—for one whole month.

Who do you suspect was the person Meng Fei had seen? After he chased them, did he manage to catch hold of them or not? If he did, by chance, catch up to that person. How do you think the two of them continued to do after that?

Upon waking up from his dreamlike expression, Meng Fei made his way over to his parents to have a seat. "Dad, Mom, I want to adopt a child."

Unfortunately for you, this part of the story won't be continued here. All we're left with is the sight of He Zhi standing alone, as her bright red lips hung open in amazement. Her lonely sight as she stood in place while watching the fleeting back of the man who ran away.

Meng Fei also chuckled alongside her while lifting an arm to hug her by the shoulders.

He then cast an apologetic gaze towards He Zhi, "I'm sorry, He Zhi. I was afraid you might get mad, so I couldn't discuss it with you. So let's talk about over today, right now. So Dad, Mom, you guy's won;t refuse, will you?"

Following this moment, it was winter, so of course the temperature was now getting colder and colder by the day.

Meng Fei and He Zhi's wedding was scheduled for November, but mid October, He Zhi took notice of her fiancé a bit more often.

Meng Fei's father, Meng Qingyuan, was a renowned entrepreneur in the business world. His company was incredibly powerful, so even the family's mansion was a thing of opulence. So, despite He Zhi also coming from a wealthy family, even she was left taken aback by the extravagance of the Meng household. But at the same time, she was also giggling to herself about soon being able to marry into this household, and becoming the young daughter-in-law of such a rich and dignified house.

When she finally made her way back to the city, it was already spring, it was already a new year.

Meng Fei and He Zhi's wedding was scheduled for November, but mid October, He Zhi took notice of her fiancé a bit more often.

After meeting Meng Fei just once, she had to rush to the north without a second to spare.

"Thank you, mom! Thank you so much!" Meng Fei let out his own relieved sigh, grinning happily as he gave his thanks. Afterwards, he returned to He Zhi's side. His gaze was a mix of unease, joy, and apologetic. "Zhi, I didn't discuss this matter with you beforehand... are you mad?"

How to describe it exactly? Well, if it was another woman, they wouldn't be able to detect a thing, nothing would be amiss, but He Zhi was far more of a sensitive girl than others.

To which Meng Fei replied, "It happened like this. One day, I was on a trip to neighbouring city, and I happened to come across an abandoned baby left on the street. It was packed in a cardboard box, and might have been born just a few days prior, and it left to freeze to death! Seeing how pitiful he was, I couldn't help but bring him home with me and take care of him at my apartment, and now it had been more month. Originally, I was planning to send him to an orphanage, but he's such cute kid, especially so. I couldn't bear to part with him, so I thought about adopting him myself."

Even though she was aware that Meng Fei was just as gentle and considerate with her as before, there were also times where he seemed absent-minded, times that would prompt her to ask him if something was wrong.

How to describe it exactly? Well, if it was another woman, they wouldn't be able to detect a thing, nothing would be amiss, but He Zhi was far more of a sensitive girl than others.

Then like sleepwalker roused awake, his mouth would widen with "ah," followed by his hurried response that it was nothing.

Her jaw fell, her eyes widened in shock! Flabbergasted, she lifted her in Meng Fei's direction, looking at him, who still wore nothing a sweet smile on his handsome face. When the shock lessened, when she regained her senses, He Zhi could only feel embarrassment at his act. But soon after, that feeling was replaced by anger at the sight of everyone in the room turning their gazes from her to Meng Fei and back.

Nothing?

What's more, Meng Fei hadn't spoken any objection of their nearing nuptials, so this was at least an indication he seemingly had no regrets in marrying He Zhi. This gave He Zhi some degree of solace, and made her wonder if she was worrying too much over nothing.

His voice was loud, his tone was firm, so much so, it forced He Zhi to hear him from her sot at the other end of the parlour, even though she wished to not do so.

The doubts in He Zhi's heart festered.

When she met Meng Fei's siblings that night, there was nothing much she could say about them. They were all tall and beautiful like Meng Fei, and they were all outstanding in terms of looks, personality, and talents just the same. What had caught her eye, however, were the two unfamiliar men. One was older, looking about forty or so. He was not very tall, but he had a rather strong build. He skin was bronze, and a set of white teeth were flashed when smiled. As for hair, his was combed back neatly, giving him a completely mature air. As for the other man, he was much younger, and he had the kind of look that would make a person like him in a instant. His jet-black eyes were small, but they flitted around nimbly, making it clear he quite a clever guy.

She wasn't living with Meng Fei, so on the nights she doesn't stay over at his place, she would always call him around ten to say goodnight before going to bed.

The next day, she asked Meng Fei, and, as if nothing happened, he simply replied: "Oh. I had a friend over last night and he spent the night. We got drunk off our behinds so things got a bit crazy for a while. But there's nothing for you to worry about, alright?"

For half a month, He Zhi had to stay behind because of the funeral. Then after bidding farewell to spouse, her sorrowful father went back to work a his business. But after this, instead of returning to where Meng Fei was, to her misfortune, her company had sent her on a business trip up north—for one whole month.

After dinner was over, and the maids the tidied up, the entire family moved to parlour to relax and chat amongst themselves.

But when she called Meng Fei lately, oftentimes, there was no one there.

Meng Fei introduced the older man as his uncle, Meng Zhaoxiong, and the younger as his cousin, Meng Yun. He Zhi shook their hands in the greeting, then was shocked when heard Meng Yun was a police officer. A guy like Meng Yun, with such a easy-going personality, to He zhi, did seem like kind who would be a cop.

She did not believe in controlling where Meng Fei goes, and she knew an introvert like Meng Fei didn't have the habit of working late into the night or roaming around outside when it got that late.

Right then, everyone in that room let out a huge sigh of relief. So that was what happened! Madam Meng then hurriedly said, "Of course! Of course, we'd agree. You kids are all big and grown now, and your father and I are so lonely. We were just thinking how grand it would be to have some grandchildren here to play with! We had our hopes set on you two." She shot a happy glance towards He Zhi, one that made the young woman blush. "So we never expected that we would be sent one so soon! So, yes! Go bring that child over here and let your mom take care of it for you, all right?"

A fried stayed overnight? Really? That's all it was? He Zhi would rather put her belief in Meng Fei's words, but there was another act Meng Fei performed regularly that gave cause for her heart to be heavy. Meng Fei, as of late, was unwilling to get close to her body. It was not that he did anything noticeably out of the ordinary, it was just that women, especially those in love, are the type who would have developed a keen sense with regard to such things. He still hugged her. He still kissed her. Nothing about these actions, compared to those before, had honestly seemed amiss. However, He Zhi sensed in heart a subtle sense of alienation whenever they were connected skin to skin.

Afterwards... after that...

Whew!

She continued to asked them: "Who are you? Who are you? Hello? Who is this? Say something? Speak!" But before she could finish her questions, tat person hung up.

What's more, her fiancé being willing to adopt a child like this could be seen as a sign of his kind-hearted nature. So, in the end, she couldn't stop her heart from easing, as it also swelled with joy. So, right then, she only feigned anger as she flicked Meng Fei on the forehead and said, "You! How could you not tell me you wanted to adopt a child, huh? Seriously! Bring the child over tomorrow so I can get a good look at him!" But right after saying all this, she couldn't stop the sputtered laugh from escaping her lips.

But there was no other woman's scent on his body. There was no other scent than my own.

But then the wedding couldn't be held as scheduled, so it was put off until January of the coming year.

She wasn't living with Meng Fei, so on the nights she doesn't stay over at his place, she would always call him around ten to say goodnight before going to bed.

Thus, He Zhi went back home to help with the funeral, and Meng Fei went with her, too. But after staying just two days, he hurried back to the city. His claim was he was unable to leave his company and his work.

Meng Zhaoxiong was incredibly silent, but was in no way rude. And, lastly, Meng Yun threw in a few jokes here and there to make everyone at the table erupt in laughter time and time again. It was all incredibly lively.

After all, they were getting married. So if he wanted a child, then she could just give him one! She was not infertile! Furthermore, Meng Fei did all this without discussing with her once!

Lastly, with just one look at everyone's eyes, He Zhi could see clearly that they had all misunderstood, especially Madam Meng, herself. Her startled gaze sweeping around as if to say: Could it be... Is He Zhi infertile? After which, with a stutter, she asked her son, "W-why?"

But then the wedding couldn't be held as scheduled, so it was put off until January of the coming year.

For half a month, He Zhi had to stay behind because of the funeral. Then after bidding farewell to spouse, her sorrowful father went back to work a his business. But after this, instead of returning to where Meng Fei was, to her misfortune, her company had sent her on a business trip up north—for one whole month.

Honestly speaking, He Zhi did feel resentful deep down, but having it cleared up that Meng Fei's recent abnormal behaviour was because of something like this, it seemed as though her suspicions of an illicit affair was nothing but her own overthinking.

Even though she was aware that Meng Fei was just as gentle and considerate with her as before, there were also times where he seemed absent-minded, times that would prompt her to ask him if something was wrong.

He then cast an apologetic gaze towards He Zhi, "I'm sorry, He Zhi. I was afraid you might get mad, so I couldn't discuss it with you. So let's talk about over today, right now. So Dad, Mom, you guy's won;t refuse, will you?"

Nothing?

Whew!

He almost thought it was ghost!

Even though his reaction hadn't fully come, he had already stuffed He Zhi's coat in her arms, he had already hastily told her he'd back soon before he rushed off.

After dinner was over, and the maids the tidied up, the entire family moved to parlour to relax and chat amongst themselves.

But when she called Meng Fei lately, oftentimes, there was no one there.

It looks like... I looks like...

Meng Fei also chuckled alongside her while lifting an arm to hug her by the shoulders.

Even Meng Qingyuan and his wife joined in at the sight of their son and his fiancé getting along, laughing with reckless abandon.

She continued to asked them: "Who are you? Who are you? Hello? Who is this? Say something? Speak!" But before she could finish her questions, tat person hung up.

To which Meng Fei replied, "It happened like this. One day, I was on a trip to neighbouring city, and I happened to come across an abandoned baby left on the street.

His voice was loud, his tone was firm, so much so, it forced He Zhi to hear him from her sot at the other end of the parlour, even though she wished to not do so.

Whew!

In just fifteen days more, their wedding will be held.

It was sight that sent a wave of discomfort right down to He Zhi's gut.

iana: damn, the audacity, Meng Fei... knowing full well that girl couldn't be the b!tch that kicks an orphan newborn to the streets in front of her 'future' in-laws. but He Zhi knew from the jump she was a placeholder, at best. she gets what she gets, like everybody else here. she got a good head otherwise, she'll be alright.
